About Spitfire Acres
Spitfire Acres is an event center, retreat, and botanical garden in the heart of Southaven, Mississippi. It has over five acres comprising approximately 10,000 square feet of interior and exterior entertainment areas. Located in a highly secluded and wooded area, the property is located directly north of and adjacent to Sacred Heart School on Tchulahoma at Church Road.
The building was completely refurbished in 2011 by David McCammon, General Contractor and his team of remodeling specialists. The following years were marked by the restoration of a mid-1800s era hand-hewn log structure, the construction of a wedding arbor overlooking the lake, and extensive outdoor deck and bar area construction and renovation.
Upgrades to the premises are on-going, with the most recent addition being new flooring on the main level. We hope to collaborate with the Chickasaw Trails Association to place historic markers along the old Chickasaw roadbed, which is still in existence wandering through the property.
Indoor Spaces
The contemporary, spacious interior is fully furnished and accessorized with many original artworks. The facility offers the following areas and features:
- Meeting room with a 70-inch flat screen TV/monitor
- Flexible-room with soaring fireplace for dining, dancing, etc.
- Prep kitchen for cold food storage plus warming and catering needs
- Main floor sitting room with second fireplace and an additional flat-screen TV/monitor
- Bridal Suite with ample room for dressing
- Restroom and double vanity with two makeup stations
- Two upstairs office sitting rooms with restroom facilities (can be used for groom’s quarters)
Outdoor Features
Nearly 5,500 square feet of deck, dock, and patio space with 220 feet of wrought-iron railing are right on the 2-acre stocked pond that wraps around two sides of the building. Mature trees protrude through the deck. You’ll also find a gunite, lagoon-style swimming pool with a weeping wall and a separate waterfall gracing the pond. A lovely gazebo-style, outdoor bar awaits to accommodate you and your guests’ libation needs.
Warm up a cold winter night in one of the sturdy wrought-iron chairs beside the cozy gas fire pit in the front Courts Yard, named in honor of our neighbors, the Courts family and extended Courts family. Stroll across the front lawn and visit the wishing well or the wedding arbor. Check out the renovated hand-hewn log structure for a beautiful photo op. Wander around the levee, explore nature trails, see the wildlife, and experience that peaceful country feeling just minutes from city amenities.
Local History and Cultural Significance
Previously part of a larger tract of land including the Sacred Heart School property, Spitfire Acres is serendipitously associated with the 1996 Gregory Productions movie, The Spitfire Grill starring Ellen Burstyn and produced by the late Southaven resident Roger Courts. (Ref. Wall Street Journal 8-14-96.) Proceeds from the award-winning movie funded construction of Sacred Heart School, whose cafeteria is named The Spitfire Grill.
Roger Courts and his business partner Mark Ratay once lived and operated a travel agency in the lovely New Orleans-style building near our entrance driveway. With their encouragement, we named the property after the movie because the stories follow a similar plotline of redemption and hope. Roger was quite generous sharing movie memorabilia including a signed movie poster, a framed musical score from the movie autographed by the Oscar-winning composer James Horner (Titanic, Apollo 13, Braveheart, Avatar, A Beautiful Mind), and a movie prop apron for the kitchen.
